Hanmi
The Hanmi School of Esoteric Buddhism
Hanmi is a school of Chinese Esoteric Buddhism, which was established in China between 712 and 720 A.D during the reign of emperor Tang Xuanzong. This school traces its lineage to Sakyamuni Buddha, down through Nagarjuna to Nagabodhi, and on through Vajrabodhi to Amoghavajra to Huisu and in more recent times through Huitong to Huiling and from Huiling to Master Yu Tianjian – Dechan Jeuren, the Mahavairocana Dharma King, 49th Lineage Holder of the Esoteric School and 47th Lineage Holder of the Linji Chan School.

History of the Hanmi School
The school was established by the Three Great Enlightened Masters, Subhakarasimha, Vajrabodhi and Amoghavajra who came to the Daxing Shansi, Great Propagating Goodness Temple, which was the predecessor of the Temple of the Great Enlightener Mahavairocana, in the ancient capital Chang’an, today’s Xi’an city. There they translated many Buddhist scriptures, sutra and tantra, from Sanskrit to Chinese and assimilated the prevailing teachings of China, Taoism and Confucianism with Buddhism, evolving the practice of the Esoteric School. The three masters were well received by Emperor Tang Xuanzong and their teachings were quickly taken up by the Tang court and among the elite and by the time of the reign of Emperor Tang Taizong (r. 762-779) its influence among the upper classes outstripped that of Taoism.
Historically, the Hanmi Esoteric School was thought to have been lost when Emperor Tang Wuzong who, disliking the popularity and abilities of the school’s practice, banned the teaching. At this time Huiguo, Amoghavajra’s best known disciple left China with his student Kukai for Japan, where they founded the Japanese Esoteric School which became known as the Shingon school. Amoghavajra had however, unknown to history, another student, Huisu, who had received all the religious instruments and dharma transmission and became the Dharma Lineage Holder. Since this time the Hanmi School has been underground, the Dharma Lineage being passed on through one Master per generation.
In 1989, a discovery was made in the Heaven Chamber of the North Pagoda at Chaoyang City, Liaoning Province. They found sharira, or the bone relic of the Buddha, sutra and tantra engraved in silver plates in Chinese, two Chinese Stupas of the Diamond and the Womb Worlds, and the Stupa of Five-Buddha-Five-Wisdom. Later, a Hanmi mandala was also discovered in the Earth Chamber of Famen Temple (Famensi), or Dharma Doorway Temple at Fufeng County, Shaanxi Province. These discoveries predicted the revival of Hanmi Buddhism.
Grandmaster Huiling, the then lineage holder, found Dechan Jeuren, Master Yu on the 99th days after the discovery. Master Yu, under the guidance of Grandmaster Huiling, attained self-realisation at the age of 39 and received complete empowerment and transmission, and became the Great Enlightener MahaVairocana Dharma King Dechan Jueren, the 49th Great Acharya, his initiation took place at Zhaojue Monastery in Sichuan, China, with the renowned Master Qingding as witness.
